Ever feel like you’re energetically carrying something heavy or foggy, but you can’t quite figure out what—or why? Maybe you wake up exhausted, find yourself stuck in thoughts that don’t feel like yours, or feel emotions and physical symptoms that seem to come out of nowhere.
Energy moves, it lingers, and sometimes, it sticks to you—even when it isn’t yours to carry.
If you’re like me, you probably absorb energy from everything (hello, empaths of the world!). A stressful conversation, someone else’s bad day, or even the lingering energy in a room can sneak into your space and throw you off before you even realize it. And the longer that energy builds up, the more drained, disconnected, or ungrounded you become.
But here’s the good news: you don’t have to carry what isn’t yours. When you start recognizing the signs and practicing simple clearing techniques, you can release it, feel lighter, and return to your own energy flow again.
In this post, we’re diving into:
- The four main ways energy can stick to you: physically, mentally, emotionally, and behaviorally.
- What to watch for so you can quickly recognize misaligned energy.
- Simple but powerful techniques to clear your energy and reclaim your space, clarity, and balance.
Before we start, you might want to check out my post on The Four Bodies—one of the most popular topics on my blog! It breaks down the four ways energy interacts with you (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually) and how it can either support or drain your well-being. Give it a read, then come back here to learn how to release energy that isn’t yours from your four spiritual body fields.
Now—let’s clear what doesn’t belong to you and step back into your power.
Physical Signs: When Your Body Feels the Negative Energy
Your body has an incredible way of speaking to you, especially regarding energy. Sometimes, it whispers with a little fatigue after a long day; other times, it shouts with unexplained and sudden sharp pains or a headache. If you’ve ever felt drained or “off” after spending time in a crowd or talking to someone emotionally intense, your body might be trying to tell you something—it’s carrying energy that doesn’t belong to you. (Of course, this isn’t medical advice, it’s just a simple reminder that if the energy truly isn’t yours, you don’t have to hold onto it. If the energy truly is yours, it’s best to find the root cause of it with the help of medical practitioners, etc.)

Here’s A Few Ways It Might Show Up in Your Body:
- Drained After Social Interactions: You feel completely wiped out after being around certain people or in busy places—even if you got plenty of sleep.
- Unexplained Discomfort: Headaches, tension, or random body aches creep in, especially after social interactions.
- Overstimulated Senses: Sounds are louder, smells are sharper, or your skin feels overly sensitive—like your nervous system is on edge.
- Weird Symptoms While On the Road: One minute you’re fine, then suddenly nausea, a headache, or random pain hit. You might be picking up someone else’s energy on the road or sensing an imprint left behind in a high-energy location (like the site of a past accident). My body picks up headaches and stomachaches – and it’s been a long road (pun intended) to remembering to check in with it immediately – so I can let it go with ease immediately as well, instead of suffering with the pain for a day or more.
Your body is like an energetic sponge, constantly soaking up the vibrations hanging out around you. Crowded spaces, emotionally charged conversations, or areas with lingering energy imprints (like accident sites or areas of thick nostalgic history – for example, battlegrounds, old houses, or ancient sites) can leave traces of past energies in your system. Over time, if not cleared out, this energy can weigh you down physically—leaving you tired, tense, or just plain “off.”
What You Can Do to Clear It:
1. Start with a Simple Question:
This is the first thing I do. In fact, it’s becoming my go-to whenever my super-sensitive body gets strange symptoms of ALL kinds:
Check in with yourself. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and ask:
“Is this mine?”
Your first instinct—whether it’s a feeling, thought, or sensation—is the truth. If the answer is no, release it by saying:
“This energy isn’t mine. I release it now. Only my energy is allowed to remain.”
Say it with power, conviction, and knowing this is the Truth and a very important energetic boundary. Whenever you feel discomfort of any kind, doing this will keep you embodied, grounded, and in control.

2. Move It Out of Your Body:
When energy feels heavy or stuck, movement helps:
- Shake out your hands, arms, and legs to break up stagnant energy. I do it above the bare earth to make sure it’s not recycled in my home and family members. My partner does this in the shower so it goes down the drain, again, into the Earth.
- Breathe deeply into your belly, swirling all the bad energy into your breath and breathing it out of your body once again. Advanced tip: Blow this old energy with intention into the Earth or into a candle flame (without blowing out the fire!). If you simply blow it back into your environment you may re-absorb it. If I’m in bed or at work and it’s not the best time to light candles or visit the front yard, I visualize a gopher hole and see the breath going inside of that, down deep into the Earth to be cleansed and composted.
- Once you’ve released the negative energy remember to always fill the void it left by and visualizing golden white or violet light or washing over your body and into this space within, filling it up and making sure it clears anything remaining that doesn’t belong.

3. Ground Yourself:
Grounding helps discharge energy you don’t need into the earth, where it can be neutralized. “This practice relies on earthing science and grounding physics to explain how electrical charges from the earth can have positive effects on your body.
- Place your bare feet on grass, dirt, or sand. Simply putting your feet or bare skin on the Earth will do the trick. My favorite? Warm sand on the beach. It sends tingles through my whole body!
- If you’re unable to get outside, simply imagine roots growing from your feet or where your body is connecting to the chair or bed deep into the earth. Let those roots pull away anything that isn’t yours.
- If you’re in the car, picture roots growing down through the floor and releasing the excess energy into the ground. Advanced tip: The rubber in your tires will make grounding in a car more difficult, so you might want to pull off in a safe location and actually get out to do this work. Some will argue that specific shoe soles will do the same, so remember to use your intention and/or get your bare feet outside when possible.
- Again, fill up the void with golden white or violet light.
4. Claim Your Space:
Sometimes, it’s not just your body but the environment around you that’s holding energy. Here’s how to set boundaries:
- Say out loud:
“I do not accept any energy other than my own into my space. I release everything that isn’t mine.” - If the energy feels especially heavy, imagine a sphere of white light around you (or your car) that seals your energy field and protects you.
- Invite Archangel Michael in to cleanse your space and offer his shield of protection around you and your property. You can do this at any time – I love to do it every evening before bed and morning before the day. I believe he kept my house from burning to the ground at one point because I am so habitual with asking for his help (the burn mark is still on my wood wall… incredible!)
- If it’s an entity energy (perhaps one who was once alive) it’s not allowed in your space. Their time is over, and you’re the one alive and in your space now. They have no right to be there – even if you’re OK with it. The energy is still a drain on you and everyone will be happier and healthier if they move on to where they’re supposed to be.
- Demand your space is yours, and they leave. If it is difficult, you may need the help of a skilled energy healer to help. Those of us trained for such matters should be able to do so quickly and easily for you, in person or remotely.
Your body constantly processes the energy around you, even if you’re unaware of it. Taking a moment to pause, ask questions, and consciously move energy allows you to reset. These simple practices can make all the difference, leaving you feeling lighter, more grounded, and free from weight that doesn’t belong to you.
Mental Signs: When Your Thoughts Feel Scattered or Stuck

Your mind is like the command center of your energy. When it’s clear and calm, you feel aligned, and focused. But when it’s cluttered with thoughts, conversations, and worries—especially ones that aren’t even yours—it can leave you feeling foggy, overwhelmed, and disconnected.
Have you ever found yourself replaying a conversation in your head for hours? Or struggling to focus after spending time around someone emotionally intense? Maybe you even get stuck in negative thought loops or patterns. These are signs your mind might be holding onto energy that doesn’t belong to you.
How Your Mind Might Be Picking Up Extra Energy
Your energy field doesn’t just absorb emotions and physical energy—it also picks up thought patterns, voices, worries, and especially limiting beliefs from others. External energy, whether from a conversation, social media, or collective stress, can get stuck in your mental space, creating internal dialogue that feel hard to break. When these thoughts or internal voices don’t belong to you, they can leave you spinning in confusion, stress, or negativity. Your mind starts to control you, instead of the other way around. Here are some ways it can show up:
- Mental Fog & Confusion – You struggle to think clearly or focus, especially after being around intense people or environments.
- Overanalyzing & Replaying Conversations – Interactions stick in your head, making it feel like someone else’s energy is lingering with you.
- Persistent Negative Thoughts – Thoughts that feel intrusive or draining but don’t seem tied to your own emotions.
- Feeling “Off” – A vague but strong sense that something isn’t right, even if you can’t pinpoint the cause.
How to Clear Mental Clutter and Reset
When your mind feels overwhelmed, here’s how to release the weight and take back control:
1. Recognize What’s Happening
Sometimes, all it takes is acknowledging that your thoughts feel overstimulated or cluttered by external energy. You can first start by asking “Is this mine?” or try reframing the situation:
“I don’t need to hold onto this mental weight. I choose to reset and create clarity.”

2. Clear the Mental Clutter
- My Bookshelf Technique (Mental Filing):
I have a bookshelf that I bring to mind when I can’t sleep, or when I catch thoughts starting to pile up without clarity and bringing me down. This is a 2-part bookcase, the left hand side being the “trash compactor” and the right being the “save for later.” You can imagine what to do…- Trash Shelf: Place mental clutter here, the stuff that really doesn’t matter, and imagine it being trash-compacted and released. This is destroyed forever, and you’re in essence letting the Earth, Angels, Source or whoever you want to have it, clean it up and make it right.
- For Later Shelf: This shelf is for the stuff you really do need to mentally chew on after you get a good night’s sleep or attack a different to-do-list. Leave unimportant thoughts here for the night, freeing your mind to focus on sleep or clarifying other important things on your agenda.
- Visual Sweep (Mental Reset):
Close your eyes and imagine sweeping your mind clean with a golden or white light. Picture the clutter dissolving as your mental space clears and calms. - Tell Your Mind Whose In Charge:
Place your hand on your forehead and say: “Mind, I’m in charge. It’s time to rest. I release control to my higher self now.”
This simple physical gesture creates a boundary and signals your nervous system to slow down. - The Balloon Release:
Imagine breathing it into a helium balloon if a thought feels tied to heavy emotions. Visualize the balloon floating away, carrying the thought to the sky, stars, or an archangel who will handle it for you. - Breath Reset:
Take deep belly breaths: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and exhale for 4 seconds. With each exhale, imagine releasing any heavy or stuck thoughts.
3. Stop the Spin with Physical Awareness
When your mind is stuck in a loop, grounding your body can interrupt the cycle:
- Hold something cold, like an ice cube or a smooth stone, and focus on the sensation.
- Slowly sip a glass of water, paying attention to the coolness and texture as you drink.
- Rub your hands together, place them over your heart, and breathe deeply to reconnect with your body.
- When you lie down to rest, find something comforting and focus on it: the cozy warmth of your bed, the softness of your pillow or the rhythm of your breath slowing down. The longer you concentrate on these good sensations and how your body is internalizing the feelings, the easier it becomes to calm your thoughts.
5. Create Your Own Clearing Ritual
There’s no one-size-fits-all method for mental clarity. Get creative with how you clear your thoughts:
- Visualize locking them in a safe until morning.
- Picture them floating away like feathers on the wind.
- Imagine flipping a mental off-switch to quiet the chatter.
The key is to choose an approach that feels natural and effective for you. On any given night with an excess of thoughts, I can be creating any sorts of clearing practices. Just bringing your attention to stopping these thoughts works wonders. It’s in the practice, continuing to silence them, that you begin to control your mind instead of the other way around.
When you stop analyzing and start releasing, your mind can reset itself. These practices—whether it’s visualizing, grounding, focusing on comfort or any other techniques you invent—help you let go of what doesn’t belong to you and reconnect with clarity and peace. By taking intentional steps to manage your mental space, you’re no longer at the mercy of scattered thoughts or external energy.
Emotional Signs: When Your Mood Feels Hijacked
Of course, women can feel like their mood is hijacked every month around the same time, and we can all remember a time that we blamed a full moon or a retrograde, right? But what if our emotions spin out for no other reason we can think of? All of a sudden you’re swirled into some lower vibes? Anxiety, depression, fear, grief… the list can go on and on and we can find ourselves spiraling downward.

What Junk Emotional Energy Might Feel Like
- Sudden Mood Swings – Feeling sharp emotional shifts (sadness, anger, or anxiety) with no clear trigger.
- Crying Unexpectedly – Feeling heavy emotions or even shedding tears seemingly out of nowhere.
- Empathy Overload – Absorbing other people’s emotions so deeply that you experience them as your own.
- Emotional Exhaustion – Feeling emotionally drained after being around certain people, places, or even watching any media or listening to music designed to evoke feelings.
Your energy field is designed to interact with the world around you—it’s always “listening.” For highly sensitive or empathetic people, this means your energy can soak up emotional frequencies like a heavy, stinky old sponge.

If you’ve ever walked into a room and instantly felt tension, sadness, or heaviness, it’s likely because your energy field absorbed emotional imprints left behind by others. It’s like walking into a brick wall of nastiness. Sometimes, these emotions linger long after the interaction or moment has passed. Without clearing them, they can weigh you down and leave you feeling emotionally off-center.
How to Cleanse Negative Emotions That Aren’t Yours
Step 1: Recognize It’s External Influence
- Emotional overload is a sign your energy field is carrying weight that doesn’t belong to you.
- Ask: “Is this mine?” and if yes, simply acknowledge:
“I Release all emotions that don’t belong to ME.”
Step 2: Tapping (EFT) for Emotional Clearing
- Tap through EFT points to release emotional weight:
- Start at the karate chop point (side of the hand) and say:
“Even though I feel this emotion, I honor myself and let it go.” - Move through the points (eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, nose, chin, collarbone, and head) with affirmations like:
- “This energy isn’t mine to hold.”
- “I release what doesn’t serve me and reclaim my peace.”
- Start at the karate chop point (side of the hand) and say:
Step 3: Cord-Cutting Visualization
- If you feel emotionally tethered to a person, place, or experience, imagine a cord of light connecting you to that energy.
- Visualize the cord dissolving as you say:
“I release this connection with love. My emotional space is now clear.” - You can also ask Archangel Michael to cut any and all cords your energy is attached to. This keeps healthy energetic boundaries – you aren’t cutting social or family cords, just energetic ones. And 99.99% of the time, these cords should be cut. (In all of my years, I‘ve only heard of one case in which this wasn’t a good practice at the time, but the healer was able to detach them after a few months of deep work.)
Step 4: Emotional Recalibration Techniques
- Water Reset – Wash your hands or take a bath/shower, imagining the emotions washing away with the water.
- Movement Reset – Shake out your arms or do light stretches to release excess energy.
- Sound Clearing – Use chimes, drumming, or soft music to shift the emotional frequency around you.
- If you have people over to your house often and you’re sensitive to energy, consider putting a small birdhouse or similar right outside of your door. Place the intention on it that anyone’s energy that doesn’t match the light, bright, clean and pure energy of your home can simply stay there, outside the boundary of your house, and said person can pick it back up on their way out. This keeps everyone’s energy and boundaries intact, and respected. And it keeps your house clean!
Step 5: Get an Energy Healing Session

Sometimes, no matter how much clearing you try on your own, certain emotional weights just need a little extra support to fully release. That’s where professional energy healing comes in.
Energy healing works by clearing stuck emotions and energetic patterns from your field—especially those that have been weighing you down for far too long. A session can help you reset your energy, bring you back into balance, and reconnect with your authentic self.
Your energy field thrives on intention. When you consciously release emotions that don’t belong to you, it’s like hitting the reset button. Tapping, energy healing, and visualization work because they clear stuck energy from your field and remind your body, mind, and spirit that it’s safe to let go.

Behavioral (or Spiritual) Signs: When Your Boundaries Blur
Behavior is the bridge between all the layers of our being—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It’s how everything we experience in those realms funnels into our actions, decisions, and the way we navigate the world. In a sense, behavior is the most outward expression of our spiritual landscape. When our boundaries blur, it’s a sign that something deeper is out of alignment—and this misalignment often reveals itself in how we interact with others and show up in our own lives.
How It Might Be Showing Up in Your Life
- Internalizing Others’ Problems: You feel personally responsible for fixing someone else’s issues, often to the point of emotional distress.
- Inconsistent Boundaries: Saying “no” feels difficult, and you find yourself constantly prioritizing others’ needs over your own.
- People-Pleasing: You adjust your behavior or take on roles to accommodate others, leaving little room for your own needs and desires.
- Overidentifying with Others: You absorb others’ fears, stress, or struggles so deeply that the line between their energy and yours becomes blurred.

Your behavior is often shaped by the energy you absorb and the belief systems you’ve internalized over time. When your energetic boundaries are weak, the influence of others’ emotions, needs, and expectations can seep into your field and dictate your actions.
- Weak Energetic Boundaries: Without strong energetic protection, you naturally absorb the emotions and burdens of those around you.
- Belief Systems: Deep-rooted beliefs like “I have to help others to be loved” or “I’m responsible for their happiness” create patterns of over-giving, self-sacrifice and may lead to codependency (hand raised… that was ME, over and over again).
- Absorbing Roles: Whether it’s playing the caregiver, the fixer, or the peacemaker, you may unconsciously take on roles that don’t belong to you—at the expense of your own well-being.
How to Realign and Reclaim Your Energy
When your boundaries blur, the key is to recognize the pattern, set intentional boundaries, and reconnect with your own needs. Here’s how to start:
1. Pause and Acknowledge What’s Happening
The first step to shifting behavior is awareness. Take a moment to reflect on whether you carry energy or responsibilities that aren’t yours.
- Affirm to yourself:
“I Am not responsible for carrying this energy or fixing this situation. I AM releasing what is not mine.”
2. Strengthen Your Energetic Boundaries
- Visualization for Protection:
- Imagine yourself surrounded by a sphere of golden or white light, creating a clear boundary between your energy and the outside world.
- Visualize external energy bouncing off the sphere and dissolving before it reaches you.
- Declare Your Space:
- Say aloud:
“This is my space. I protect my energy and only allow in what serves my highest good.”
- Say aloud:

3. Detach with Compassion
Letting go of others’ energy doesn’t mean you don’t care—it means you’re choosing to honor your own space.
- Energetic Disconnect:
- Visualize any stress or emotional weight you’ve taken on flowing gently back to its source with love.
- Say:
“I return this energy with love. I reclaim my space.”
- Journaling Practice:
- Write down what you feel you’ve taken on from others.
- End with a releasing statement:
“I lovingly let go of this burden. It is not mine to carry.”
4. Reclaim Your Power
- Affirm Your Worth:
- Use affirmations to remind yourself of your value:
- “I am worthy, even when I set boundaries.”
- “I honor myself by protecting my energy.”
- Use affirmations to remind yourself of your value:
- Focus on Your Needs:
- Reflect on what makes you feel balanced, happy, and grounded—and give yourself permission to prioritize those things without guilt.

5. Rituals to Reinforce Your Boundaries
Before engaging with people or situations that tend to drain you, set an intention:
- “I will stay rooted in my own energy and not take on what isn’t mine.”
After the interaction, clear any lingering energy:
- Take a salt bath, smudge with sage, or do a grounding visualization to reset your energy field.
6. See an Energy Healer
Sometimes, the weight of blurred boundaries and over-giving can feel too heavy to release on your own. Energy healing sessions are a powerful way to reset your energy, strengthen your boundaries, and release what isn’t yours.
An energy healer works with your energetic field to clear blockages, resolve patterns of over-identification, and restore balance so you can feel like yourself again.
When you create clear boundaries, you stop absorbing the energy, emotions, and struggles that aren’t yours to carry. This doesn’t mean shutting others out—it means protecting your energy so you can show up as your best, most balanced self.
By detaching with compassion, you let go of burdens that don’t belong to you while still holding space for others in a way that feels healthy and aligned. Over time, these practices help you reclaim your power and live from a place of connection to your true self, not the expectations of others.
Your behavior is a reflection of how your energy interacts with the world. When your boundaries are clear, your actions and decisions align with your authentic self, not the weight of external influences. By practicing these simple rituals and mindset shifts, you can start protecting your energy, letting go of what’s not yours, and showing up in the world with clarity, confidence, and balance.

Letting Go of What’s Not Yours
Your energy is sacred, and so is your space. The more you learn to recognize what doesn’t belong to you—whether it shows up in your body, your thoughts, your emotions, or your behaviors—the more empowered you’ll feel to let it go. Clearing that weight isn’t just about feeling better (though you will); it’s about creating room for the real you to emerge.
When you take these small, intentional steps to reset and protect your energy, you’ll find clarity, balance, and a deeper connection to yourself. But sometimes, you need a little extra support to release what’s been stuck or weighing you down.
